După ce Gotham Independent Film Awards şi-a făcut publice premiile, a doua gală pre-Oscar importantă în industria americană de film şi-a anunţat nominalizările. Moonrise Kingdom, stilizata poveste de dragoste între doi adolescenţi semnată de Wes Anderson, şi Silver Linings Playbook, de David O. Russell (drama unui fost profesor afectat de o boală psihică şi a văduvei unui poliţist, fiecare luptând cu propriii demoni) domină Independent Spirit Awards cu cinci categorii bifate, urmate de Beasts of the Southern Wild, Middle of Nowhere and Keep the Lights On, cu câte patru fiecare. La categoria Cel mai bun regizor, concurenţi sunt Wes Anderson, David O. Russell, Ira Sachs, Benh Zeitlin şi Julia Loktev.
În jur de 50 dintre cele 299 de filme indie înscrie au primit o nominalizare la premiile Indie Spirit, iar multe dintre ele şi-au început cariera la Sundance, Cannes sau Toronto. Premiile scot în faţă titluri pe care membrii Academiei Americane de Film ar trebui să le ia în considerare la Oscar. Sunt, totodată, un foarte bun ghid pentru cinefilii interesaţi de producţiile realizate în afara marilor studiouri de la Hollywood, care nu vor ajunge, cel mai probabil, în circuitul sălilor de cinema.
